About Sunoak
I bought my first welsh terrier in 1976. She produced my first 3 homebred Champions! I bought CH Coryridge Talisman in 1978. She became a multiple group and Best in Show winner! She also produced several Champions including a Register of Merit producer.
Joe bought his first welsh in 1983, he showed Chelsea to her Championship. Chelsea also produced many champion offspring.
My husband and I were professional handlers as well as showing our own Welsh Terriers. We retired in December 2022. We are now concentrating on our Welsh Terriers and I am an AKC all terrier judge.
Our dogs are bred and raised by longtime breeders with full time dedication to the breed. We breed for temperament and health as well as conformation.
We have 4 grown children and 7 grandchildren! We have a home on 60 acres in Southern Michigan. We have our wonderful Welsh Terriers, one Champion Kuvasz, three Lamancha goats, a pony for our grandchildren, two New Zealand rabbits, laying hens, some steers, and racing pigeons.
We are preservation breeders of Welsh Terriers. We have dedicated our lives to our children, grandchildren and to our dogs! We have many years of experience breeding and caring for our dogs.
I started showing dogs in 4H with a miniature poodle. He was a great obedience dog. I also raised a Labrador for Leader Dog for the Blind School. When I was going to training class I met my first Welsh Terrier and fell in love! I eventually bought her in 1976. She never finished her Championship (She didn’t like to show) but she completed a CD in obedience and her Certificate of Gameness. She also produced several champions.
Joe always loved terriers, he decided that Welsh Terriers were his favorite! He bought Chelsea in 1983 and has had welsh ever since. Chelsea was a wonderful smart dog. She completed her championship and produced several champions. We have been married for 30 years, and have lived and worked in Hanover for 28 years. Joe has a Bachelors degree in Animal science from MSU, while I have a degree in nursing RN from Henry Ford College.
We were professional handlers and showed and groomed many breeds of terriers. Welsh have always been our favorites! When our children started school Joe stayed home from the dog shows and took care of the children and dogs and our farm. He also groomed the terriers.
I was fortunate to buy very important dogs for my breeding program. The first was Ch. Coryridge Talisman from her breeder Betty Anshutz. She was my first Best in Show winner in 1981! She produced several Champions and a Register of Merit producer. She also produced generations of Champions.
The second dog was Ch. Cascade Lane’s Samson McBee from his breeder Eleanor Wigler. Sonny became a multiple Best in Show winner and National Specialty winner. He was a Register of Merit producer and produced generations of Champions
We have imported Welsh from reputable breeders in other countries to disperse the gene pool. We imported a beautiful bitch from Jurgen Gothel in Germany and leased her brother at a later date. Ch. Ilsa von der Hohen Flur and Ch. Irrwisch von der Hohen Flur. Jurgen leased Ch. Gatewood Roll The Dice from me. He had Jac Houben show Dicey to many Best In Shows in Europe including the famous Bundesigger show in Germany. I believe Dicey has more Championships than any other Welsh Terrier! We also traded males with Natalia Sarycheva-Avveduti and Giuseppe Avveduti for a few years. They had our Ch. Sun Oak Carrying A Torch who completed his Italian Championship and produced many beautiful Champions in Italy and other countries. He is now home with us producing beautiful healthy puppies and Champions. We leased and showed GCh. Cunnings Marcus. He was a top winner in Europe including winning the group at the World show. He produced many champions and beautiful pets here.
We have bred and owned many generations of Champion Welsh Terriers as well as producing many wonderful healthy pets!
